There is a common misconception that fresh food is healthier to consume than frozen. While fresh is largely preferred, opting for frozen food is becoming more popular. In fact, frozen food is more economical and has its own functions and benefits.
French fries, for example, cook best when frozen. Arguably, same goes with meat. Even frozen vegetables sold in packs are distributed more safely than fresh produce, as cold temperatures do not allow bacteria to thrive so food does not spoil or gather bacteria during its travel to the markets.
Freezing food is one of the best methods of preserving food, even fresh items. As a leading food distributor in Bali, Puri Pangan Utama will show you how you can safely freeze food and store food.
Firstly, you must know your equipment. Will your 2-in-1 freezer/refrigerator do the job? If you do not own a standalone freezer, your frozen food may not stay up to months. This depends on how often you open your refrigerator to say, grab milk in the morning or eggs to cook. This frequent activity changes the temperature inside. Lesser traffic will preserve the temperature, therefore preserve your frozen food.
Keep the temperature of your freezer low and consistent. Once you start stocking up on frozen food, avoid touching the thermostat.
Always try to freeze fresh. When you freeze food at its freshest point, you avoid comprising the quality of the food. If you wait days after, the food may already have bacteria growing.
Don’t freeze hot food. Wait until it cools off prior to storing it in the freezer. Drastic temperature change may affect the food and others in the freezer.
Use labels to keep track of the dates, so you get an estimation of when the food goes off. Consume your preserved foods within this timeline:
- Deli foods: up to 2 month
- Meat, ground: up to 4 months
- Meat, uncooked: up to 6 months
- Fish, uncooked: up to 6 months
- Chicken, uncooked: up to 9 months
Once frozen food is thawed, do not refreeze. It is wise to pack them in single servings to avoid wastage.
Use proper freezer bags or containers to avoid freezer burns. Normal lunch bags may break in cold temperature, which defeats the purpose of preserving food.
