Soybeans are among the world’s healthiest and most versatile food crops. They can be processed into tofu, milk, soy sauce, soybean oil, tempeh, natto, and miso.
These beans can also be eaten whole, including as immature soybeans known as edamame. Traditionally eaten in Asia as a snack or incorporated in meals, edamame is gaining popularity in Western countries.
As a leading food supplier in Bali, Puri Pangan Utama provides you with the highest quality of fresh and frozen food. We have compiled a list of the main science-based health benefits of edamame, which you can purchase via our online store.
What is Edamame?
Edamame beans are whole, immature soybeans. They are green in color, different to regular soybeans. They are typically sold frozen while still encased in their pods, which are not edible.
Edamame is prepared by boiling with their pods with a pinch of salt. They normally served as a side dish or added to soups, stews, noodle dishes, even salads.
They are a whole protein source. A cup of cooked edamame provides around 18.5 grams of protein. They are among the best plant-based protein sources and the cornerstone of many vegan and vegetarian diets.
May lower cholesterol
One study concluded that eating 47 grams of soy protein per day can lower total cholesterol levels by 9.3% and LDL (the ‘bad’) cholesterol by 12.9%. These plant compounds may reduce the risk of heart disease and improve the blood lipid profile, a measure of fats including cholesterol and triglycerides.
May reduce the risk of Breast Cancer
Soybeans are high in plant compounds known as isoflavones.
Isoflavones resemble the female sex hormone estrogen and may bind weakly to its receptors, which are located on cells throughout the body. Several observational studies have associated a high intake of soy products or isoflavones with increased breast tissue, potentially reduce the risk of breast cancer.
May reduce the risk of Prostate Cancer
Studies have found that soy foods don’t just benefit women. They might also protect against cancer in men. Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer in men with about one in seven will get it at some point of his life. A number of observational studies show that soy products can lower the risk of prostate cancer by 30%.
