Other than tasting incredible, the Korean Citron tea comes with extraordinary nutritional benefits you may not be aware of.

Korean Citron Tea is a herbal tea made from “Yuja“, in English known as the citron fruit. Therefore, its name of origin “Yujacha” (Citron tea). Yuja is widely recognized as a herbal remedy and ingredient for a variety of desserts, cocktails, and main courses. It is a perfect example of an ingredient that is embraced not only because of the flavor it holds, except of its healing properties. Yuja is known for its ability to:

  • Cure flu’s
  • Calm coughs and soothe sore throats
  • Act as an excellent source of vitamin C
  • To ease seasickness
  • To possess antibiotic properties
  • Enhance the skin’s complexion

Even though Yuja is categorized as citrus fruit, it still has distinguishing characteristics compared to lemons or limes. It has a distinct bitter and sour taste that is rarely used for fresh juices or zest but used to make marmalade, tea, and common Korean dishes. Some people often add honey or sugar to soften the Yuja’s acidity and diminish its bitterness. This refreshing fruit bears an interesting history:

History of the Yuja fruit

Korean legend says that a man named “Jang Bo Goh” was bringing a Yuja tree from China to Korea. A storm struck the tree, causing its leaves and fruits to be crushed. Jan Bo Goh then carried the seeds of the Yuja tree into his coat. As he continues to travel throughout South Korea, the Yuja tree’s remnants fell out and took root, resulting in the fruit flourishing in Korea.
